The 1st of March denotes the beginning of spring and the promise of warmer days. Mărțișor (Martaki or Martenitsa) is an old tradition celebrated all over Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, Albania every year, on March.
Pizho, the male doll, is usually predominantly white; Penda, the female doll, is distinguished by her skirt and is usually predominantly red; we can say this is the typical Bulgarian martenitsa. Usually, both women and men wear it pinned to their clothes, close to the heart, until the last day of March, when they tie it to a fruit-tree twig.
